DEPARTMENT OF MINING ENGINEERING
Introduction
Mining Engineering is an engineering discipline that involves practice, theory, science, technology and application of extracting and processing minerals from a naturally occurring environment. Mining engineering also includes processing minerals for value addition. The need for mineral extraction and production is an essential activity of modern industry. Mining activities by nature cause a disturbance to the environment in and around which the minerals are located.

Modern mining engineers must, therefore, be concerned not only with the production and processing of mineral commodities but also with the mitigation of damage to the environment as a result of that production and processing.

The Mining Engineering is one of the main branches of engineering situated amidst the century-old Kolar Gold Mines. Asia's largest mines, like Kudremukh Iron Ore and Neyveli Lignite, are situated at a distance less than 250 Kilometres. The Mining Engineering department has well-established labs and has an underground mine model, the only one of its kind in the State.

The department has a strong industry-institution interaction to enable exposure to the latest technological trends for students and teachers and to impart practical training at HGML, NMDC, etc.

National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM) a research institute extends thefacility for the training of students in various project works. Recent additions to the laboratory include a sophisticated electronics survey station and electronic precision level. The department also has a computer laboratory for data processing.

Sl. No. Name of the Software Application
1 RS2 & RS3 RS2 a complete 2D & 3D geotechnical finite element software package for both soil and rock. Supports anchored wall analysis and sheet wall analysis.
2 SLIDE2 & SLIDE3 Slide is a limit equilibrium slope stability program for evaluating the safety factor or probability of failure, of circular or non-circular failure surfaces in soil or rock slopes.
3 SETTLE Settle is a settlement and foundation software that provides an analysis of soil settlement & consolidation under foundations, & liquefaction analysis.
4 DIPS Designed for interactive analysis of orientation based geological data. Visualize orientation vectors, density contours, planes, intersections, and traverses. Draw user-defined planes, sets, and annotative tools.
5 ROCFALL2  & ROCFALL3 RocFall is a statistical analysis program designed to assist with assessment of slopes at risk for rockfalls. The program can determine Energy, Velocity, and Bounce Height envelopes for the entire slope, as well as rock Location Endpoints.
6 SWEDGE SWedge is a quick, interactive and simple-to-use analysis software tool for evaluating the geometry and stability of surface wedges in rock slopes.
7 ROCPLANE RocPlane is an especially useful tool for geotechnical engineers analyzing bench stability in open pit mines and rock slopes. RocPlane is an interactive software tool for performing planar rock slope stability analysis and design.
8 RSPILE RSPILE is used to analyze a laterally loaded pile foundation in soil/rock, a nonlinear relationship needs to be applied that provides soil resistance as a function of pile deflection.
9 ROCSUPPORT RocSupport is a quick and simple to use program for estimating the deformation of circular tunnels in weak rock, and visualizing the tunnel interaction with various support systems.
10 RSDATA Rock’s strength criteria and observed stress-strain behaviours using field and lab test data and compare them against numerical simulations of the same tests.
11 ROCTOPPLE Analyze 2D block or block-flexural toppling stability given the slope geometry, and the joint spacing, dip and strength. RocTopple employs the Block toppling method of Goodman and Bray (1976), a Limit Equilibrium method which takes into account toppling and sliding failure modes of each individual block.
12 UNWEDGE UnWedge is designed to be a quick, interactive, and easy-to-use tool for the analysis of the geometry and stability of underground wedges defined by intersecting structural discontinuities in the rock mass surrounding an underground excavation.
13 EX3 EX3 (formerly Examine3D) is an engineering analysis program for underground excavations in rock. It can be used to analyze and design underground excavations for civil engineering and mining applications.
14 CPILLAR Assess the risk of crown pillar failures using probabilistic analysis, as part of underground mine closure planning and decommissioning.
